Giving Children the Gift of Music

Preschool graduation performance at Newport Primary School.  Kindermusik International is the world’s leading provider of early childhood music and movement programming. St. John’s has been an active partner in bringing Kindermusik classes to more than 100 preschool children and families at risk in the Newport community. These are families who otherwise would not have access or be able to afford an enrichment program for thier children.

St. John’s provided the initial seed money to afford a licensed teacher, musical instruments and take home materials for the preschool children at Bright Days Early Childhood Center. The Clyde Day Foundation added its financial support to maintain the program year round and to expand Kindermusik classes into Newport Primary School. St. John’s helps to administer the program and Nancy Knauf, licensed Kindermusik instructor, is on staff as Director of Education and Outreach.

Powered by Kindermusik, the ABC Music & Me curriculum for schools is research based and research proven. In 2012-2103 an independent research firm learned that students who participated in ABC Music & Me for as little as 30 minutes each week, experienced 32% greater gains on the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS).

Classes are structured around singing, movement to music, instrument exploration, literacy and listening. Children learn important social-emotional and cognitive skills plus language and basic math concepts. Classes stimulate physical development, creativity and an appreciation for music. Plus, it’s fun!
