Help a child do better in school
Whiz Kids developed by City Gospel Mission is a literacy-based, one-to-one tutoring and mentoring program. City Gospel Mission works closely with local churches and organizations as they embrace a neighborhood public elementary school, develop relationships with school administrators, and provide tutors for the children.
St. John’s UCC partners with Movement Church in Newport, KY to provide 1-1 reading tutoring to 1st & 2nd grade students at Newport Primary School. Tutoring sessions typically occur for one hour each week during the school year. The average child in the Whiz Kids program improves 3 reading curriculum levels each year.
Tutoring has the power to boost children’s academic scores, create strong readers and improve confidence. Our volunteers become so much more than tutors. They become mentors, friends and positive role models that change the lives of children beyond the classroom. If interested in getting involved, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Whiz Kids program lets Christ’s love transform lives
After I moved to Newport and joined St. John’s UCC last year, I wanted to participate in a church program. Whiz Kids appealed to me because I have always loved escaping into the wonder of books (as a teenager, I read Gone With the Wind in a weekend) and love sharing my love for reading good books, plus it was a program that involved the broader community. The program has been a good fit for me.
I was assigned to a wonderful little girl in the second grade who is a delight and we have been exploring our talents. It is always a joy to see the world through the eyes of a child. It has been rewarding for both of us when sight words are recognized, new words are sounded out and discovered, and there is a move forward to the next level book. It is fun and fulfilling…there is a sense of achievement for both of us. I have also enjoyed getting to know the family of my Whiz Kid and having a positive connection.
I believe that Whiz Kids is a wonderful program that partners with our community, assists children and their families in building skills, fosters possibilities and dreams, and lets Christ’s love transform lives. It has been a blessing in my life to participate in the program.
